Great Lakes Limestone Trade Down Slightly in 2023
Shipments of limestone on the Great Lakes trekked down slightly in 2023. The Lake Carriers’ Association reported that limestone shipments totaled 28.6 million tons in 2023, a decrease of less than one percent compared to 2022. Last year’s loadings were below the trade’s five-year average by 1.1 percent.
U.S quarries saw a less than one percent increase from 2022 to 23.1 million tons. Shipments from U.S. quarries were below their five-year average by less than one percent.
Limestone shipments from Canadian quarries totaled 5.5 million tons, equalling a decrease of 4.4 percent compared to 2022. The total was 1.8 percent below the five-year average.
