Canada to Build Six New Program Icebreakers

Canada will invest more than $11 billion CAD to build six new program icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) in partnership with Chantier David Canada, Inc. The icebreakers will be built in Canada at the Davie Shipyard in Lévis, Québec, along the St. Lawrence River. The program icebreakers will replace the CCG’s aging heavy and medium icebreakers that operate on the St. Lawrence River and four eastern Canadian provinces along the Atlantic Coast in the winter and in the Arctic during the summer season. Construction will begin in 2027, with the first ship ready five years later. The full fleet will be in service by 2038. The project is expected to create nearly 5,000 jobs during the construction phase.
