The Chamber of Marine Commerce (CMC) named U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy (R-NY), as the 2026 recipient of its Champion of the Great Lakes Award during the Great Lakes Day Congressional Breakfast Reception held at the Cannon House Office Building in Washington.

The award recognizes U.S. elected officials who demonstrate support for policies that strengthen economic growth and supply chains through marine shipping on the Great Lakes.

Langworthy, who represents New York’s 23rd Congressional District, was recognized for his efforts to support the role of Great Lakes shipping in regional and national economic activity. The CMC said he has worked to raise awareness among fellow lawmakers about the importance of the maritime sector to jobs, industrial supply chains and communities across the region.

The CMC represents more than 100 organizations involved in the marine transportation supply chain across North America, including ship operators, ports, terminals and cargo shippers.

Joshua Juel, president and CEO of the CMC, said Langworthy and his staff have been accessible and responsive on issues affecting Great Lakes marine transportation.

“On behalf of more than 100 member organizations that comprise the membership of the Chamber of Marine Commerce across North America, including a number within the state of New York, I want to thank Rep. Langworthy and his team for the accessibility, responsiveness, and support they have shown regarding Great Lakes marine shipping issues over the past year,” Juel said. “He understands that our industry is the cornerstone of dependable supply chain that grows the North American economy and helps build appreciation of our contributions among others.”

Marine transportation on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway supports trade across North America and international markets. Shipping on the system moves large volumes of bulk commodities including grain, iron ore, construction materials, potash used in fertilizer and road salt.

A 2023 study by Martin Associates found marine shipping on the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway system, as well as coastal and Arctic regions, generates $50.9 billion in annual economic activity across North America. The study estimated the industry supports about 360,000 jobs and moves more than 252 million tons of cargo annually.
