Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor Awarded $11.2 Million Federal Grant
Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor has been awarded an $11.2 million federal grant to modernize cargo handling equipment and prepare for potential international container service.
The funding comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP). The grant is part of a $498 million federal investment announced by Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy for 35 port projects across 19 states.
The $14 million Burns Harbor Container Handling Modernization Project includes a $2.8 million contribution from Ports of Indiana. The funding will support the purchase of a mobile harbor crane, bulk-handling attachments, reach stackers, a top handler and off-road yard trucks.
The equipment will support existing port operations while providing the flexibility to handle container traffic if market demand develops. The mobile harbor crane can be configured with bulk grabs, breakbulk lifting gear or container spreaders, allowing the port to handle steel, bulk materials, construction materials and project cargo.
Indiana Gov. Mike Braun said the investment would help the port move goods more efficiently and provide farmers and manufacturers with a more direct route to international customers.
Ports of Indiana Chief Financial Officer Erica Jackson said the grant, combined with the port’s contribution, would allow the facility to make greater use of its existing docks and terminal space while generating revenue to support long-term operations.
U.S. Sen. Todd Young said expanding Burns Harbor’s shipping capabilities has been a priority and would create opportunities for Indiana businesses while supporting domestic and international trade.
U.S. Sen. Jim Banks also cited the project’s role in modernizing port operations. U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan said the funding could support economic development and job creation in Northwest Indiana.
